What Is an Empty Leg Flight?
An empty leg is a private charter flight that flies without paying passengers because the aircraft must reposition — returning to base or moving to its next pickup. Operators sell these one-way segments at a discount to recover fuel, crew and handling costs they would otherwise absorb entirely.
Every one-way charter creates an empty leg somewhere. If a client flies Miami to Teterboro one way, that aircraft is now in New Jersey with no revenue trip home. The operator either flies it back empty at full cost or sells the capacity to someone traveling that direction anyway. Empty legs are also called ferry flights, repositioning legs, dead-heads or empty sectors — all the same thing, described from different sides of the transaction.
The discount is real but the constraints are severe. The route is fixed: it goes where the aircraft needs to go, on the schedule the aircraft needs to keep. You do not pick the departure time, the airport pair, or the tail number. Availability typically surfaces days — sometimes hours — before departure, because the originating charter has to be confirmed first. And an empty leg is one-way only; getting home is a separate booking at a separate price.
The largest risk is cancellation. An empty leg only exists because of the paid flight that creates it. If that original charter moves its date, changes destination, or cancels outright, the empty leg evaporates with it — sometimes after you have booked and paid. Read the contract for what happens then: whether you receive a refund, a re-accommodation on another aircraft, or nothing at all. Reputable operators disclose this before taking money.
Empty legs are still charter flights, not budget travel. Even discounted, a Miami-to-New-York empty leg on a midsize jet is a four-figure or five-figure purchase, and the same federal excise tax applies to the amount you pay. They make sense when your dates are elastic, your route happens to match an aircraft's existing movement, and you can genuinely absorb a last-minute cancellation. They make no sense when you have a meeting to make, a connection to hold, or a group whose plans cannot move.
