What Is the Beam of a Boat?
Beam is the width of a boat measured at its widest point, usually amidships. It is quoted alongside length and draft in every specification sheet. Beam largely determines interior volume, deck space, and initial stability, which is a boat's resistance to rolling when it is at rest or under way.
Beam is the single most underrated number on a charter listing. Two 50-foot yachts can differ by four or five feet of beam, and that difference is not marginal. It compounds across the whole boat: a wider hull yields a larger salon, wider side decks, a broader sun pad, and a bigger swim platform. On a day charter where guests spend most of their time stationary at a sandbar, beam translates almost directly into comfort.
It also governs stability. A wide hull resists rolling because righting force scales sharply with width. This is the entire principle behind a catamaran, which achieves stability through the beam separating its two hulls rather than through a heavy ballasted keel, and consequently rarely heels more than three to five degrees in moderate conditions. A monohull achieves comparable stiffness only by carrying substantial ballast low in the hull.
The tradeoffs are drag, cost, and access. A wider hull pushes more water and generally needs more power for a given speed. Marinas price slips by length and beam, and an unusually wide boat may simply not fit a standard slip. In transit, beam limits which locks, canals, and lift bridges a vessel can use, and it is a hard constraint on overland transport.
When you compare charter options, read beam next to draft and length together. A wide, shallow-draft boat is optimized for exactly the kind of protected-water, anchor-and-swim day that Biscayne Bay offers. A narrow, deep-draft hull will be more efficient and more comfortable in an offshore chop but will give you less usable deck and will anchor further off the bar. Beam is quoted as maximum beam unless stated otherwise, and on some designs the widest point is a rubrail or a flybridge overhang rather than the hull itself, so a slip that fits on paper may not fit in practice. Ask for hull beam when it matters.
